On Saturday, November 17, 2007, Bayside Engineering, Inc. was one of the sponsors for the 20th Annual Mayor's Hillsborough River and Waterways Cleanup at Lowry Park. Five Bayside employees volunteered to help steward one of Tampa's shoreline treasures along with approximately 1200 other volunteers of a wide range of ages, organizations, companies and schools from the community. Arriving at 7:45am on a crisp, sunny morning, Mikhail Solovev, Sue Horton, Dan Harris, Ben Wadsworth, and Jan & Mija Breslin, were greeted with coffee, donuts, fruit, and juice before receiving their free t-shirts and one of about 30 area assignments. Mayor Pam Iorio greeted everyone with gratitude as she kicked off the Event.
Armed with only plastic bags, gloves, and committed souls, these six volunteers worked enthusiastically along the Hillsborough River next to the Sulphur Springs Tower. Litter, debris, and invasive plants were removed in an effort to restore Hillsborough River's shoreline. Dan Harris found the bottle with an orange piece of paper in the assigned area which meant a prize at the end of the morning.
After the completion of the clean-up assignments, volunteers were rewarded with lunch and music by Bobby & the Rockets. Assortments of Environmental Education displays were available for further edification. Ending at 1pm, the morning event proved both satisfying and fun for our Bayside team knowing that a contribution was made for a quality of life that benefits the Tampa community.
